			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS TENABLE IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH &amp; DOCTORAL STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA</p>
<p>Job Description : The University of Pretoria regards itself as a research intensive university. Hence, it is seeking candidates who will make a significant contribution to its research endeavour. As part of an initiative by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the University of Pretoria has made funds available for two doctoral scholarships for students coming from Commonwealth Countries (excluding South African students). This scholarships will be known as the University of Pretoria Commonwealth Doctoral Scholarship , which will be awarded on a competitive basis.</p>
<p><span id="more-264"></span>The University of Pretoria has established a reputation for academic excellence, particularly in relation to some of its major research activities. <p>Goals of the Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program</p>
<ol>
<li>Provide a unique opportunity for African lawyers to learn about legal, public policy, and human rights issues affecting women;</li>
<li>Expose African lawyers to different legal, leadership and advocacy skills that may be implemented or adapted for use in their home countries to advance women’s human rights;</li>
<li>Expand the pool of lawyers in Africa who are concerned with laws and public policies affecting African women, and whose skills enable them to advocate more effectively for women’s human rights in their home countries;</li>
<li>Forge new links between those working on the similar women’s human rights issues in Africa and Washington, DC, consciously coordinating efforts and sharing information;</li>
<li>Enable African lawyers to perform meaningful work during the Fellowship with public interest organizations in Washington, DC;</li>
<li>Demonstrate to women’s rights lawyers the intimate connection between policy-making and lawyering;</li>
<li>Contribute to the crucial work being done in African countries to improve the status of women;</li>
<li>Increase the understanding of women’s rights as legal and public policy issues of equal importance to women and men;</li>
<li>Spark effective research, writing and advocacy initiatives to improve enforcement of laws and regulations designed to improve the status of African women; and develop a forum for leaders and other prominent policy makers in Washington, DC, to address legal, public policy, and human rights issues relating to African women.</li>

<p>[Erasmus mundus-ifgi] Call for applications &#8211; scholarships for MSc in Geospatial Technologies and MSc in Geoinformatics (specific countries)</p>
<p>With the support of the North-Rhine-Westphalian Ministry for Innovation, Science, Research and Technology (MIWFT), the Institute for Geoinformatics offers<br />
1. Five scholarships for the MSc program in Geoinformatics (4 semesters, start October 1, 2009)<br />
2. Two partial scholarships for the MSc program in Geospatial Technologies (3 semesters, start September 4, 2009) for nationals of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China (P.R.), Costa Rica, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uruguay.</p>
<p>The scholarships include<br />
1. Tuition waiver for all semesters<br />
2. Scholarship: 850 € per month (not for the first semester in Spain or Portugal (September 4, 2009 – February 28, 2010) in the MSc in Geospatial Technologies)<br />
3. Support health insurance: 70 € per month (not for the first semester in Spain or Portugal (September 4, 2009 – February 28, 2010) in the MSc in Geospatial Technologies)<br />
4. Support travel costs according to real costs: up to 1.000 € for a flight to/from Europe before starting/after finishing the program and up to 1.000 € for one home flight to/from Europe in between.</p>

<p>PhD Scholarship from Microsoft</p>
<p>The PhD Scholarship Programme recognises and supports exceptional students who show the potential to make an outstanding contribution to science and computing. This programme supports PhD students in computing and those working at the intersection of computing and the sciences.</p>
<p>Application deadline: 16 September 2009<br />
Applications must be complete and received by the announced deadline to be considered. Proposals received after this deadline will not be considered.<br />
Notification of results: December 2009</p>
<p>Eligibility Criteria</p>
<ul>
<li> Only PhD supervisors should apply. If their project is selected, the supervisor has up to a year to find the best possible student for the project. Joint applications by two supervisors from different disciplines are especially encouraged.</li>
</ul>

<li> We usually consider only one application per university department or per laboratory of a national research institution.</li>
</ul>
<ul>

<p>The Capacity Strengthening unit (CaSt) of ILRI is designed to build and strengthen the scientific knowledge and technical capacity of scientists, educators, technicians, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders in the livestock innovation systems in developing countries. ILRI’s Capacity Strengthening activities are research based. The institute offers individual and group training courses. Support to Post Graduate training is one of the key components of the programme.</p>
<p>ILRI with the generous funding support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is offering five Ph.D scholarships for Livestock Researchers from the sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. ILRI invites applicants from young African scientists based at the research and learning institution. The priority research themes are:</p>

<li>Climate change, impacts and adaptation</li>
<li>Livestock, environment and sustainability</li>
<li>Emerging diseases, impacts and human health</li>
<li>Market access, value chain analysis and SPS</li>
<li>Risk, vulnerability and sustainability of pastoral systems</li>

<li>Smallholder livestock intensification and implications</li>

<p><strong>Eligibility</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Any final-year student who has completed his/her Masters thesis with distinction (80% or higher or a Dutch rating of at least 8  )can apply. Any thesis thematically related to socio-geographical, economic, political, juridical or anthropological issues or focusing on the humanities such as history, religion and literature (but with the exception of language and/or semiotic studies) can be submitted.</li>
<li>The thesis must be socially relevant and can be be written in English, French or Dutch.</li>
</ul>
<p>The award consists of a price of 1000 euros. The winning thesis will also be published in the ASC African Studies<br />

NATIONALS FROM EAST AFRICA</p>
<p>These scholarships are offered under the research project “EOIA: An Earth Observation? and Integrated Assessment approach to the Governance of Lake Naivasha” is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research under the WOTRO ?Global Science for Development Programme.</p>
<p>The project will be implemented jointly by Egerton University (Kenya), and the International Institute of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC, The Netherlands) and the University of Twente (The Netherlands). Collaborating partners are the University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Leicester (UK) and the University of Bournemouth (UK). The main stakeholders in the project are Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA), Lake Naivasha Growers Group (LNGG), Lake Naivasha Riparian Organisation (LNRA), World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) and the World Wildlife Fund ? East Africa Regional Programme Office (WWF?EARPO), all based in Kenya.</p>
<p>The research aims at enhancing sustainability in management of water resources and the environment using Lake Naivasha as a pilot case and adopting Integrated Assessment approach to generate lessons and best practices which can be replicated in other catchments in Kenya and in the East Africa region. Major inputs to the assessment include participatory processes and physical and economic models combined with data derived from remote sensing techniques.</p>
<p>In the framework of this project 5 PhD candidates will be recruited for the following projects.<span id="more-93"></span></p>
<p>1. Quantifying the effect of landuse change in upper catchments of Lake Naivasha on water quantity and quality of the Lake ? Tenable at ITC/Twente</p>
<p>2. Impact of exogenous and endogenous changes on limnology, fisheries and piscivorous birds – Tenable at Egerton University Kenya</p>
<p>3. Hydrological impacts on terrestrial fringe biodiversity?Tenable at ITC/Twente</p>
<p>4. Water governance – Tenable at University of Nairobi</p>
<p>5. Socio?economic linkages – Tenable at ITC/Twente</p>

<p>The candidate for this position will take up the challenge to integrate the results from the five subprojects and build the Integrated Assessment framework. Requirements and modalities.</p>
<p>The positions 1, 3 and 5 are PhD positions for 4 years at ITC with a Doctoral Degree awarded by the University of Twente.</p>
<p>Position 2 entails a PhD position for 4 years at Egerton University with an internship at ITC. Doctoral degree awarded by Egerton University.</p>
<p>Position 4 entails a PhD position for 4 years at University of Nairobi with an internship at ITC. Doctoral degree awarded by University of Nairobi.</p>
<p>Candidates should be nationals of East Africa and hold a Master of Science/Arts degree from a recognized university. All candidates will spend approximately two years in the Netherlands and two years in Kenya and are co?supervised by the research consortium. Candidates who are below 45 years are preferred. Female candidates are encouraged to apply.</p>
<p>From all candidates a broad and multidisciplinary attitude is required.</p>
<p>Candidates for position 1,2,3 should have a strong background in Engineering and Environmental Sciences, and preferably with knowledge of modeling and earth observation as well as earth sciences.</p>
<p>Candidates for position 4 should have a strong background in (environmental/ecological) economics.</p>
<p>Candidates for position 5 should have a strong background in public policy and administration, and capable of closely collaborating with more technical and economic researchers.</p>

<p>The appointment will be for a period of four years and the fellowship awarded to the successful candidates comprises:</p>
