Our department consists of outstanding faculty members and graduate students with over 40 faculty members and over 100 PhD students. Our medium of teaching and research is English. Besides having a strong publication track record, our faculty and students are among the first to develop advanced and popular P2P systems, industry standards on RFID and sensor networks, computer graphics and vision systems, large-scale data mining and machine learning systems for Web search, GPU and parallel computing for database query processing, to name a few. After getting their PhDs, our students find jobs in worldwide research labs such as Microsoft Research, Google, IBM and top universities in Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. A student who has a master’s degree is expected to graduate with a PhD in 3 years, and an undergraduate degree to graduate in 4 years.
Starting in 2010, we are particularly happy to offer the prestigious Hong Kong PHD Fellowship of HK$20,000 (~USD 2,580) per month, plus a travel allowance of HK$10,000 (~USD 1,290) for three years.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme – Knowledge Management – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Description:
Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programs in Hong Kong’s institutions.
Eligibility
Those who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in UGC-funded institutions of Hong Kong, irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.
The Fellowship
The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,0001 and a conference travel allowance of HK$10,0001 per year for the awardees for a maximum period of three years. 135 PhD Fellowships will be awarded for the 2010/11 academic year2.

Review Panels
Applications, subject to their areas of studies, will be reviewed by two Selection Panels with experts in the broad areas, one for science, medicine, engineering and technology and another one for humanities, social science and business studies.
Selection Criteria
While the academic excellence is of prime consideration, the Review Panels will take into account, but is not limited to, the four yardsticks below for the selection of candidates:
1. Academic excellence;
2. Research ability and potential;
3. Communication, and interpersonal skills; and
4. Leadership abilities.

The Scheme will call for application in early September 2009.
Each applicant may choose up to two programs in one or two institutions for PhD study when applying for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship. Application should be made through the Online Application System (OAS) which will be available in early September 2009. The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship application is also regarded as a formal application for admission to the PhD program(s) offered by the institution(s) concerned. Applicants are therefore required to fully comply with the admission requirements of their selected institutions and programs except the application deadline, which should strictly follow the stipulated deadline for the Fellowship scheme. The Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JCCI) Singapore Foundation, in cooperation with Waseda University in Japan, set up a one-year scholarship program for university undergraduates to study culture, history, society, politics, economics, geography, arts, literature and so forth of Japan and other parts of Asia. The scholarship program was established in 1995 to commemorate Singapore’s 30th Year of National Independence and the 5th Anniversary of JCCI Singapore Foundation.The Foundation hopes to provide young Singaporeans an opportunity to study in Japan through this program. Also, it wishes to promote further exchanges and cooperation between Singapore and Japan. The successful candidate is thus expected to play the role of a diplomat with the task of strengthening the bilateral relations.
Conditions and criteria
• All applicants must be Singapore citizens, below the age of 28 (as at 1st January 2010).
• Applicant must be a university undergraduate or graduate from an Arts and Social Sciences, Business or Law background.
• Applicants with some knowledge of basic Japanese language will be preferred.
• Applicant must have genuine interest in Japan.
• He/ She must be physically healthy.

The Scholarship is for studies in selected Singapore schools from Secondary Three to Pre-University Two and is renewed annually, subject to the satisfactory performance of the scholar.
Application period for the 2010 ASEAN Scholarships for Indonesia will be open from 6 June 2009 (9 am Indonesia Time) to 15 July 2009 (10pm Indonesia Time).
Students from Indonesia are welcome to apply for the ASEAN Scholarships for Indonesia to enter Singapore schools at the Secondary Three level. Candidates who are not short-listed for the scholarships will be considered for the Merit Awards.
