The coming years will show a proliferation of Global and Regional Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS/RNSS). This promise of a broader multi-frequency, multi-constellation “system of systems” has the potential to enable a wide range of demanding applications for high-accuracy Australian GNSS/RNSS users.
PhD Scholarship in GNSS at Curtin University To improve Australia’s capability in utilising the next generation GNSSs and to come to a fullest exploitation of the opportunities created, Curtin University of Technology will establish a new GNSS research group. The group’s research programme aims at developing theory, models and methods that will enable future GNSSs to fulfil the highaccuracy
and high-integrity requirements of tomorrow’s geospatial information needs in the Earth-, atmospheric- and space-sciences.
This GNSS programme is also timely because of the forthcoming GNSS CORS
network across Australia as part of the AuScope Geospatial programme. This will provide an excellent large-area ‘field laboratory’ in which to first test, then implement, the results generated by this programme. The GNSS group will use state-of-the-art equipment and software, and involve close collaborative links with other universities, industry and government, both in Australia and overseas.
Applications
Applications are invited for 4 PhD positions in the following thematic areas:

GNSS surveying and geodesy (e.g., RTK, PPP and CORS networks),

GNSS remote sensing (e.g., meteorology, reflectometry, ionospheric sounding)

Air/space-based GNSS applications (e.g., relative navigation, attitude determination, formation-flying)

GNSS software receiver (e.g., design/implementation, CDMA DSP)

GNSS quality control (e.g., integrity theory, ambiguity resolution, validation)

The general team strategy is to exploit the diversity of the multi-constellation GNSS and the unique properties of their ultra-precise, multi-frequency carrier-phase tracking data to enable high-precision, high-integrity, real-time kinematic GNSS parameter estimation.

Computer-Aided Drug Design PhD Scholarship 2009 – University of New South Wales for citizen of Australia

Scholarship Introduction:

The Computer-Aided Molecular Design group at UNSW has an Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) scholarship available for one student to pursue a full time PhD degree and participate in a project supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Avexa Ltd. The research area is the development of novel techniques to take protein flexibility into account when using computer-aided modeling in drug design. Of particular interest is the design of new inhibitors of the reverse transcriptase enzyme of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and their development into drugs. We specifically look for applicants with a strong background in molecular pharmacology and/or medicinal chemistry. Good skills in computer-aided molecular modeling would be a bonus; interest in how small molecules interact with their protein targets and in computer-aided molecular modeling is essential.

AusAID will accept ALA Scholarship applications for the 2010 academic year from March 19, 2009 until June 30, 2009.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) program aims to develop leadership, build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific, and address priority regional issues. The ALA program is comprised of Scholarships and Fellowships. Awardees are selected from the public, private and community sectors within countries where Australia has a significant aid program.

ALA Scholarships are offered to high achievers from the Asia-Pacific region to undertake postgraduate study (Masters or Doctorate) at an Australian university. Study programs must relate to AusAID’s priority areas of disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water & sanitation. Scholars also undertake an extensive Leadership Development Program while in Australia.

Selection for ALA Scholarships is highly competitive, based on leadership qualities and on academic excellence.

ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region. In this regard, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies.

Goal of the ALA Scholarship Program

The goal of the ALA Scholarships program closely reflects the objective of AusAID awards. That is, through the provision of award opportunities, AusAID Awards seek to develop capacity of individuals and their workplaces to contribute to

long-term development, stability and security of Australia’s partner countries

establishment and maintenance of mutually beneficial linkages between partner countries and Australia, as well as within regional networks

Objectives of the ALA Scholarship Program

By providing ALA Scholarship awardees with opportunities to develop selected leadership skills1 and establish professional networks, the program intends to address the following objectives.

Positive contributions by ALA Scholarship alumni to policies, practices and research relevant to respective country program objectives2, which are relatively greater than the contributions of other AusAID scholarship alumni.

Participation in professional networking opportunities by ALA Scholarship alumni at the local, regional and global level, relevant to respective country program objectives, which is relatively greater than the level of professional networking of other AusAID scholarship alumni.

1 Leadership attributes that are particularly pertinent to development practitioners are strategic thinking (planning skills, inclusive participation and ownership, harnessing communication technology, knowledge transfer, managing for results, and ethical practice) and an inspirational approach (leading by example, effective communication and interpersonal skills).

2 Or nearest equivalent

Leadership Development Program (LDP)

“REALISING THE LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL OF EACH SCHOLAR”

Through the enhancement of leadership skills, ALA Scholarships seek to empower awardees to lead social and economic policy and development outcomes in their own countries and in the region. Current and future leaders in the Asia-Pacific region are provided with a unique opportunity to explore and harness their leadership potential.

AusAID has invested A$10.128 million over four years to deliver a comprehensive Leadership Development Program (LDP) to all ALA scholars.

The LDP comprises a three day conference in Canberra, regional workshops and leadership coaching and practical opportunities. The LDP increases skills in leadership and enhances participants’ understanding of the challenges at national, regional and global levels. The LDP aims to help scholars realise their full leadership potential and provides important networking and collaborative opportunities.

The annual value of the Fellowships is linked to the value of Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs) plus 10%. As an indication, an APA in 2008 was worth $22,020 per year.

Number of Fellowships

FFI may vary the number of Fellowships awarded from year to year for any reason. As a guide only, the annual number of awards made in recent years has been in the order of 5 – 6 Fellowships. FFI reserves the right not to award Fellowships in any year.

Selection Criteria

FFI awards its Fellowships using a holistic review and selection process. Applications from all academic disciplines are welcome. FFI’s decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into in respect of any aspect of the applications and awards process. Applicants who miss out in any given year are welcome to reapply in subsequent years; however, as a matter of policy, FFI does not offer opinions or advice on the quality or future prospects of unsuccessful applications.

The Process

1. You submit your application so that FFI receives it by the closing date.
2. All received applications are acknowledged in writing.
3. Applicants who pass the stage 1 competitive review process are asked to participate in an interview. This is either face to face at The University of Queensland, or by telephone for regional and overseas applicants. Interviews take approximately 20 minutes. Interviews typically take place in September / October. Interviews provide an opportunity for applicants to concisely articulate the key aspects and benefits of their research proposals.
4. FFI endeavours to make offers to Fellowships no later than November.
5. FFI’s policy is to advise unsuccessful candidates at the earliest practical time.

To help us, and to help your application

Be on time: Make sure we receive your application by the due date.

Be complete: Check you have supplied ‘Application’ Items 1 – 6 as per the website. Remember: An incomplete application may jeopardize your prospects.

Use the right forms: Use the application form and the referee forms on the website.

Post your application: We do not accept emailed or facsimiled applications.

Give your referees time: Don’t leave your referee reports to the last minute.

‘Long term’ contact: We need to stay in contact with you. If you are likely to change address, institution, or country during your application, then on your Application Form provide us with personal email and postal details where we will find you even if you are moving around.

We will contact you: Please be patient during the review process. While you will be keen to know the status of your application, your ringing or emailing won’t speed up the process. It is best to wait until we contact you.

Change in circumstances: If for any reason your circumstances change (for example, you change your course of study, receive another scholarship, or enter full-time employment) you must contact the Registrar in writing immediately in order that your eligibility for a fellowship may be re-assessed. Note: Receipt of another scholarship or full-time employment disqualifies one from receiving an FFI fellowship.
