Maintenance Stipend for a maximum period of 3 years (£12,940 for Session 2008/09), full overseas rate fees and a Research Training Support Grant

A very good first degree (equivalent to a UK first class honours degree) from a prestigious institution in a relevant discipline such as Engineering, Mathematics or Physics (a lower rated BSc with a Masters will not normally be accepted as the equivalent of a UK first class honours degree). Candidates must also meet the University’s English language requirements.

The Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards are a national initiative to bring outstanding students from India, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Russia, South Africa and the developing world to the UK to study for PhD degrees in top-rated research environments. The eligible countries are those listed in Part 1 on the OECD website: http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/35/9/2488552.pdf

This award is provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (www.epsrc.ac.uk) and Napier Turbochargers Ltd and is available for a research project in the area of: Multi-objective design of industrial turbochargers for reduced aeroacoustic noise and increased efficiency

Marine engine room noise is becoming the subject of ever-stricter regulation by certification bodies. Diesel engine technology is currently concerned with reducing NOx emissions and increasing fuel efficiency and power density. The consequence of the noise limits on current turbochargers is to limit the allowable pressure ratio of the turbocharger and consequently limit the reduction in NOx and limit the increase in fuel efficiency and power density.

In order to mitigate the noise, filter silencers can be fitted to compressor intakes. But these reduce the turbocharger efficiency. An alternative approach is to design the turbocharger compressors for reduced noise. However, compressor designs that reduce aero-acoustic noise in many cases result in a reduction in compressor efficiency. In this project an aero-acoustic model will be developed and will be used together with a Multi-objective/multi-point optimization strategy based on 3D inverse design method in order to reduce noise while improving the compressor efficiency. The final design will be manufactured by Napier’s Turbochargers and will be evaluated experimentally at the Napier’s test facility.

For further information regarding the project, please contact Prof. M. Zangeneh (m.zangeneh-at-ucl.ac.uk).

Applications forms are available at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate-study/application-admission/). Please also send a copy of your application by email to m.zangeneh-at-ucl.ac.uk or by post to Prof. M. Zangeneh, UCL Dept. Mechanical Engineering, Torrington Place, London WC1E 7JE, UK.

They enable talented graduates and young professionals whom we identify as the potential leaders of tomorrow to develop strong links with the UK and with each other in a global network, at the same time as becoming familiar with the UK.

Information: The aim of the award is to bring to the UK present and future leaders and decision-makers. Awards are presented annually and candidates are selected overseas by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation with the local British Council. They are usually advertised locally in those countries where the awards are offered. For further details contact the British Council, British Embassy or British High Commission in your own country.

Molecular Cancer Biology, Oncology, Imperial College London
London, United Kingdom

PhD fellowship in cancer metastasis – Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to commence 1st October 2009 within the Molecular Cell Biology Section, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London (Hammersmith Hospital Campus).

Closing date: 26 July 2009

PhD fellowship in cancer metastasis

The Prostate Cancer Charity PhD studentship

Tumour microenvironment and Cancer Metastasis teams, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to commence 1st October 2009 within the Molecular Cell Biology Section, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London (Hammersmith Hospital Campus).

Sphingosine kinase-1signalling during prostate cancer cell motility, invasion and metastasis

A major clinical complication in patients with advanced prostate cancer (PC) is metastasis to bone. The impact of this problem is evident from its occurrence in 30% of men newly diagnosed with PC and up to 75% of patients at some time during their illness. Prostatic bone lesions result in high levels of morbidity with symptoms that can include severe pain, bone fractures, spinal cord compression and eventual paralysis or death.

In this proposal we aim to elucidate the mechanism(s) that underlie sphingosine kinase 1 (SK1)-induced PC cell motility. The major techniques used are: cell migration and motility analysis (screening video microscopy in Dunn and Boyden chambers), cell invasion analysis (Matrigel), cell co-culture, confocal microscopy, western blotting, enzyme in vitro activity assays and qRT-PCR. Depending on the results of the in vitro studies we will continue to investigate the suitability of SK1 as a potential target for blocking PC metastasis using in vivo models.

The successful candidate would be a motivated person, who wants to start a PhD project, has some laboratory experience, is familiar with molecular biology techniques and highly proficient in English. Previous publications are desirable but not essential.

Valuing diversity and committed to equality of opportunity

To apply:

To apply please send your CV, including the names and addresses of two academic referees and a motivation letter to both j.sturge@imperial.ac.uk and d.pshezhetskiy@imperial.ac.uk quoting reference: PCC-2009. Alternatively please post your application to Dr Justin Sturge, Department Of Oncology, SORA, Imperial College London, 6th Floor Cyclotron Building, Du Cane Road, London, W12 0NN.
