The Chevening programme provides around 1,000 new scholarships each year for postgraduate studies or research at UK Institutions of Higher Education. In addition to that we provide over 200 Fellowship places.

Information: The aim of the award is to bring to the UK present and future leaders and decision-makers. Awards are presented annually and candidates are selected overseas by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation with the local British Council. Value: All or part of overall costs.

Eligibility: Most Scholarships are for one year Masters courses or equivalent. Shared funding scholarship arrangements with commercial companies, universities, trusts, foundations and other appropriate organisations are an important part of the programme. These scholarships are offered to more than 150 countries for students to study in the UK. The British Council on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office administers candidates for British Chevening Scholarships.

Our department consists of outstanding faculty members and graduate students with over 40 faculty members and over 100 PhD students. Our medium of teaching and research is English. Besides having a strong publication track record, our faculty and students are among the first to develop advanced and popular P2P systems, industry standards on RFID and sensor networks, computer graphics and vision systems, large-scale data mining and machine learning systems for Web search, GPU and parallel computing for database query processing, to name a few. After getting their PhDs, our students find jobs in worldwide research labs such as Microsoft Research, Google, IBM and top universities in Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. A student who has a master’s degree is expected to graduate with a PhD in 3 years, and an undergraduate degree to graduate in 4 years.

Starting in 2010, we are particularly happy to offer the prestigious Hong Kong PHD Fellowship of HK$20,000 (~USD 2,580) per month, plus a travel allowance of HK$10,000 (~USD 1,290) for three years.

Requirements

  • We are looking for outstanding undergraduate students as well as outstanding graduate students with master’s degree with some research experience. .
  • We are looking for postgraduate students in all areas in computer science and related areas, including but not limited to, artificial intelligence, data and knowledge management, networks and networking systems, software technologies, theoretical computer science and vision and graphics.
  • We also encourage students interested in multi-disciplinary areas such as bioinformatics, risk management and business intelligence and computational finance
  • Exceptionally qualified PhD applicants (top 10% in class, >85% GPA, excellent English command) are welcome to contact potential faculty supervisors and apply by Dec 1, 2009. This fellowship award is offered centrally by University Grant Council of Hong Kong.
  • We also offer a large number of postgraduate research studentship awards at HK$156,000 per year (~USD 20,000/year) . Our admission requirement for English is one of recent TOEFL(cbt)>= 580, IELTS>=7, or TOEFL(ibt)>= 92 by the time you enter HKUST.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme – Knowledge Management – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Description:

Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programs in Hong Kong’s institutions.

Eligibility

Those who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in UGC-funded institutions of Hong Kong, irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

The Fellowship

The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,0001 and a conference travel allowance of HK$10,0001 per year for the awardees for a maximum period of three years. 135 PhD Fellowships will be awarded for the 2010/11 academic year2.

Review Panels

Applications, subject to their areas of studies, will be reviewed by two Selection Panels with experts in the broad areas, one for science, medicine, engineering and technology and another one for humanities, social science and business studies.

Selection Criteria

While the academic excellence is of prime consideration, the Review Panels will take into account, but is not limited to, the four yardsticks below for the selection of candidates:

1. Academic excellence;
2. Research ability and potential;
3. Communication, and interpersonal skills; and
4. Leadership abilities.

Application Process

The Scheme will call for application in early September 2009.

Each applicant may choose up to two programs in one or two institutions for PhD study when applying for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship. Application should be made through the Online Application System (OAS) which will be available in early September 2009. The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship application is also regarded as a formal application for admission to the PhD program(s) offered by the institution(s) concerned. Applicants are therefore required to fully comply with the admission requirements of their selected institutions and programs except the application deadline, which should strictly follow the stipulated deadline for the Fellowship scheme. NATIONALS FROM EAST AFRICA

These scholarships are offered under the research project “EOIA: An Earth Observation? and Integrated Assessment approach to the Governance of Lake Naivasha” is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research under the WOTRO ?Global Science for Development Programme.

The project will be implemented jointly by Egerton University (Kenya), and the International Institute of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC, The Netherlands) and the University of Twente (The Netherlands). Collaborating partners are the University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Leicester (UK) and the University of Bournemouth (UK). The main stakeholders in the project are Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA), Lake Naivasha Growers Group (LNGG), Lake Naivasha Riparian Organisation (LNRA), World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) and the World Wildlife Fund ? East Africa Regional Programme Office (WWF?EARPO), all based in Kenya.

The research aims at enhancing sustainability in management of water resources and the environment using Lake Naivasha as a pilot case and adopting Integrated Assessment approach to generate lessons and best practices which can be replicated in other catchments in Kenya and in the East Africa region. Major inputs to the assessment include participatory processes and physical and economic models combined with data derived from remote sensing techniques.

The Fellowships

The Fellowship Fund Branch of AFUWQ Inc (FFI) awards two types of fellowship. These are:

  • The Freda Bage Fellowship (three years), and
  • The Commemorative Fellowships (one year).

The details of each are explained below. The Fellowships are named after women who have made outstanding contributions as scholars and leaders in tertiary institutions in Queensland.
Applicants may apply for both types of Fellowship in the one year (see the Application Form).

The Freda Bage Fellowship

  • only available for PhD studies;
  • studies must commence by September of the year following receipt of the award;
  • maximum period of the Fellowship is three years;
  • the annual stipend is paid in two parts, usually in January and July;
  • the first payment is made following finalisation of Fellowship documentation and FFI’s satisfaction that the program of study has been accepted by the nominated institution;
  • subsequent stipend payments are subject to satisfactory progress of the research work, as indicated by receipt of progress reports from the Fellowship recipient signed by the supervisor of the research work at the end of years one and two;
  • a final typewritten report is required at completion of the Fellowship, and should include information about any publications arising from the funded study.
